Interview with Denis Galanin about The Franz Kafka Videogame

Who is behind this idea and how you got into game development?

My name is Denis Galanin. I’m a game developer from the Urals with over 14 years of experience in video game industry. I have begun to work in video game industry in 2003 at one of the Russian gamedev companies. Since 2008 I work as independent game developer.

Explain the game in one sentence.

The Franz Kafka Videogame is an original puzzle/adventure game inspired by writings of Franz Kafka.

What made you excited about this idea?

I think, it’s very unusual, unexpected and interesting idea for video game.

How has this game changed from the original plan/vision/design?

The game is full improvisation. I had no accurate plan at the beginning, only a few ideas. You can read my article about development and improvisation.

What was your biggest struggle while making this game?

The game contains a set of unique puzzles and you won’t see anything similar in other games. Besides, all puzzles are inseparably linked with the narrative.

How long it took you to build it?

I have spent for development of the game about 2.5 years.

What did you hope for after you’ve released the game and what actually happened?

I hoped that gamers will like my game. And they really like it.

What lessons you’ve learned for future projects from this game?

My main lesson – 90% of gamers don’t know who is Kafka. And 90% of reviewers don’t distinguish creativity of Kafka from Lovecraft

What’s the biggest advice you have for people who want to work in game development?

“And now that you know how it’s done… don’t do it.”

Lastly, how video games influenced your life? How your life has changed with them?

Game development is such thing where my interests in programming, cinema, animation, comics, etc. have united.
